Paris garbage collectors strike months before Olympics

Unions and city hall differed on how many of the collectors had walked off the job on Tuesday
Paris city hall said that 16 percent of staff, or one in six, were striking

PARIS: Paris garbage collectors went on strike on Tuesday, two and a half months before the French capital is due to host the Summer Olympic Games.
Paris rubbish collectors had been warning that they could strike over the summer, raising the spectre of piles of stinking trash roasting in summer heat on the streets as hordes of athletes and tourists descend on the City of Light.
Unions and city hall differed on how many of the collectors had walked off the job on Tuesday.
Paris city hall said that 16 percent of staff, or one in six, were striking.
“Collection services were little affected today,” a city hall official told AFP, without providing further details.
But the CGT union branch that represents garbage collectors, hailed a “strong” mobilization effort, saying that 70-90 percent of staff, depending on the “arrondissement” district of the capital, had walked off the job.
CGT said that some 400 striking workers had on Tuesday morning “occupied” the building housing city hall’s human resources department.
City hall put the number at 100 and said they had left by mid-day.
CGT had warned that walkouts would occur on several days in May and then continue from July 1 to September 8.
Summer Olympics will run in Paris from July 26 until August 11, and the Paralympic Games from August 28 to September 8.
Refuse workers in the Paris region are demanding an extra 400 euros ($430) per month and a one-off 1,900-euro bonus for those working during the Olympics, when French workers traditionally take time off for the summer holidays.
The mayor’s office had previously told AFP that it would extend to refuse collectors bonuses of between 600 and 1,900 euros that it had already announced for workers contributing to the Olympics effort.
The mayor of Paris’s 17th district, Geoffroy Boulard, said the strike was “irresponsible.”
“To take hostage not only Parisians but also tourists and visitors is also an attack on France’s world image,” he said on Tuesday.
In March last year, a three-week strike by rubbish collectors against President Emmanuel Macron’s unpopular pensions reform saw more than 10,000 tons of waste piled in Paris streets at its height.
Images of the heaps of trash, some mounting several meters high, were seen around the world.

NBA fans win as Luka Doncic goes to the Lakers, Anthony Davis to the Mavericks

NBA fans win as Luka Doncic goes to the Lakers, Anthony Davis to the Mavericks
  • The NBA has seen its fair share of jaw-dropping trades, but this might be the biggest one yet

DUBAI: When the news broke, NBA fans scrambled to check the date. Surely this had to be an April Fool’s prank, right? Trades of this magnitude do not happen every day.

But no, this was real. Luka Doncic is heading to the Los Angeles Lakers, while Anthony Davis is on his way to the Dallas Mavericks.

A blockbuster deal

A trade straight out of a video game. The NBA has seen its fair share of jaw-dropping trades, but this might be the most shocking yet.

The trade sends MVP contender Doncic to the Lakers in exchange for 10-time All-Star Davis, guard Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round pick going to the Mavericks.

As a part of the three-team deal, Los Angeles also acquires forwards Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris, while the Utah Jazz receive Jalen Hood-Schifino and 2025 second-round picks from both the Mavericks and Lakers.

For the Lakers, it is a franchise-altering move, securing a generational superstar to lead them into the post-LeBron James era. Meanwhile, the Mavericks add a dominant two-way force in Davis, strengthening their defense and forming a powerful duo with Kyrie Irving.

Dream duo of LeBron and Luka

James and Doncic are a pairing NBA fans have dreamed of for years. Their combined basketball IQ, playmaking, and scoring ability could create an offensive masterpiece.

This move brings back memories of LeBron teaming up with Dwyane Wade in Miami, except now King James is the seasoned veteran passing the torch to a younger superstar.

The question is: How quickly can they build chemistry?

Mavericks’ new identity

Losing Luka is unthinkable — he is already an MVP candidate and an all-time great at just 25 years old. But in return, Dallas gets a defensive anchor in Davis and an NBA champion.

Davis at the Mavericks can return to his preferred position — power forward — instead of being forced to play center full-time when he was a Laker. If healthy, Davis can elevate the Mavericks from last season’s NBA finalists to an NBA champion.

With Klay Thompson spacing the floor and Kyrie Irving handling the offense, Dallas has reshaped its identity.

However, health remains the key concern. Can Davis stay on the court long enough to make a lasting impact?

Reactions and fallout

As soon as the trade broke, social media erupted. Memes, debates, and hot takes flooded the internet.

Lakers legend Magic Johnson called it “the biggest trade between two superstars in their prime,” while Mavericks all-time great Dirk Nowitzki simply tweeted a shocked emoji.

Meanwhile, Phoenix Suns superstar Kevin Durant said: “Insane. It’s crazy, crazy. I never would have thought Luka Doncic would get traded at this age — midseason.”

Also surprised was James, who reportedly learned of the deal “while he was out to dinner with his family” after the Lakers’ recent victory over the Knicks.

What’s next?

This trade reshapes the NBA landscape. The Western Conference, already stacked, just became even more unpredictable. Ticket sales will soar, TV ratings will skyrocket, and every Lakers vs. Mavericks matchup will be must-watch television.

And do not be surprised if Luka Lakers jerseys and Davis Mavericks jerseys sell out instantly.

Who won the trade?

The real winners? The fans. No matter which side you are on, this move guarantees an even more thrilling and unpredictable season. Buckle up —this is why we love the game.

Dubai Capitals romp to nine-wicket win over Desert Vipers to finish second in DP World ILT20 table
  • Dubai Capitals will now face the Desert Vipers again in Qualifier 1 on Wednesday

SHARJAH: The Dubai Capitals were unstoppable on Monday evening as they outshone the Desert Vipers with the ball and bat to cruise to a massive nine-wicket win in the final group game of the DP World ILT20 at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

The Capitals’ Qais Ahmad finished with a stunning spell of 4 for 25, while Gulbadin Naib lived up to his billing as one of the best allrounders by striking a brilliant unbeaten 55. The win caps an impressive turnaround for the Capitals, who began their campaign with just one win in four games but then regrouped to win four of their last five matches to finish second on the points table.

The Dubai Capitals will now take on the same opponents, the Desert Vipers, in Qualifier 1 on Wednesday, Feb. 5, while MI Emirates will face Sharjah Warriorz in the Eliminator on Feb. 6 with the winner facing the loser of Qualifier 1 for a place in the final on Feb. 7.

Chasing 138, Adam Rossington and Shai Hope took the fight to the Vipers from the first over with some aggressive batting. The duo put up 34 runs in the first four overs, with Rossington smashing 20 runs in just 15 deliveries. His blitzkrieg came to an end after he hit David Payne for a maximum, but the Englishman had him caught behind the very next delivery. Naib came to bat at one-down and made his intentions clear right away by clobbering Sam Curran for a superb four as the Capitals amassed 50/1 at the end of the powerplay. Wanindu Hasaranga threatened to stall the Capitals’ progress by conceding just six runs in his next two overs, but the batters found the boundaries when they needed them the most to coast to 76/1 at the end of 10 overs.

The Capitals remained comfortably ahead of the required run rate, and Naib flirted with his luck in the 11th over. He mistimed two shots, and both top edges sailed past the boundary ropes. The Vipers had a golden opportunity to inflict some damage when Hope skied a slow ball, but the chance went in vain as the catch was dropped and the duo soon crossed the 50-run mark for the second wicket. Hasaranga came back to finish his spell with another tight over, conceding just four runs, but Khuzaima Tanveer was clobbered for 12 runs in the 14th over as the Capitals motored on. They needed 26 runs off the final six overs and were firmly in control of the chase.

Naib flexed his muscles as he hit Tanveer for a maximum over deep midwicket to bring up his 50 off just 29 deliveries. The Vipers’ poor fielding continued as Naib was dropped, again, on the next ball. Soon after, Hope played a fine pull shot to bring up his fourth 50 of the tournament to lead the Capitals to a commanding nine-wicket victory.

Earlier, the Dubai Capitals put up a scintillating display to bowl out the Desert Vipers for 137. Obed McCoy was on the money as he struck off his first ball when Azam Khan edged it to Naib in the slips. Alex Hales threatened to get going but McCoy outfoxed him with a slower one and the Vipers were down to 39/2 in five overs. Curran joined Dan Lawrence, and the two of them offered their side some much-needed solidity with a crucial 45-run partnership. They found boundaries at will and upped the run rate as the Vipers clawed their way back into the game after losing two early wickets. One of the standout moments came in the eighth over when Curran launched a monstrous six off Naib that sailed over the stands and into the Sharjah streets.

However, Curran was undone by spin as Qais got him with a wrong’un and he departed for 28 off 20. At the halfway mark, the Vipers had 82 runs on the board for the loss of three wickets. Qais caused further trouble for the Vipers by dismissing Lawrence in his next over for a well-made 44. Lawrence’s departure triggered a batting collapse as Sherfane Rutherford was dismissed for zero before Qais picked up two more wickets in the 14th over. The wrist-spinner captured his third wicket when he bowled Adam Hose, and two balls later, he trapped Michael Jones LBW to finish with impressive figures of 4/25. The Vipers were down to 104/7, and the runs dried up. Ali Naseer made a quick departure and the Vipers managed only 21 runs off the final four overs before being bowled out for a modest total of 137. The Vipers lost their final seven wickets for 36 runs.

Desert Vipers captain Ferguson said: “These things happen. I will still back the boys. Qais bowled exceptionally. We will have to go back to the drawing board and come back again. We have been outstanding and a little blip in the end will not change anything. Max had a back twinge, but he should hopefully be fine for the playoffs.”

Player of the match Qais Ahmed commented: “When you are playing with such legendary cricketers like Sam Billings, they always support me and give me confidence. He kept saying you are our main bowler and will take wickets. The wicket was very good for spin, so I tried my best to turn the ball. I am happy for these four wickets. Of course, I enjoyed that wicket, Sam Curran is a big wicket.”

Brief scores:

Dubai Capitals beat Desert Vipers by nine wickets

Desert Vipers: 137/10 in 19.4 overs (Dan Lawrence 44, Sam Curran 28, Alex Hales 18, Qais Ahmad 4 for 25, Obed McCoy 3 for 22)

Dubai Capitals: 138/1 in 17.1 overs (Gulbadin Naib 55 not out, Shai Hope 52 not out, Adam Rossington 27, David Payne 1 for 29)

Player of the Match: Qais Ahmed

  • In San Francisco, the Golden State Warriors held off a furious late rally from the Orlando Magic to bag a 104-99 victory

NEW YORK: Jalen Brunson scored 42 points as the New York Knicks unleashed a late barrage to overwhelm the Houston Rockets 124-118 in the NBA on Monday.

The Knicks were humbled at home by the Los Angeles Lakers on Saturday and looked to be sliding to another defeat at Madison Square Garden as Houston powered into an 11-point lead early in the fourth quarter.

But Houston’s double-digit lead was the cue for a New York scoring spree that saw the Knicks erupt for an astonishing 46-point fourth quarter that turned the contest on its head.

Brunson led the charge with 17 points in the fourth, putting the seal on the comeback with two late free throws to wrap up a win that leaves New York third in the Eastern Conference standings.

Brunson received offensive support from Karl-Anthony Towns and Mikal Bridges, who both chipped in with 22 points apiece while Josh Hart also made double figures with 19 points.

Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau saluted his team’s ability to dig themselves out of a hole and grab victory against the third-ranked team in the Western Conference.

“You have to win games different ways,” Thibodeau said. “We got in a hole but we found a way to win — I loved the way we responded in the fourth quarter. Whatever it was going to take, we were going to do.”

In other games, the Oklahoma City Thunder took full advantage of an under-strength Milwaukee Bucks lineup to extend their lead at the top of the Western Conference with a thumping 125-96 victory.

The Bucks, missing Giannis Antetokounmpo, Damian Lillard, Brook Lopez, Khris Middleton and Bobby Portis, were buried by an avalanche of scoring from the Thunder, who led by as much as 44 points at one stage in the third quarter.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the rout with 34 points from just 22min 24sec on court, with Ousmane Dieng scoring 21 from the bench.

Oklahoma City improved to 39-9 with the victory and lead the West from the second-placed Memphis Grizzlies, who moved to 34-16 with a 128-109 defeat of the San Antonio Spurs.

Jaren Jackson Jr. led the Grizzlies scoring with 31 points while GG Jackson finished with 27 from the bench, including four three-pointers. Ja Morant added 25 from 9-of-18 shooting.

French star Victor Wembanyama topped San Antonio’s scorers with 27 points.

In Denver, Nikola Jokic grabbed his 23rd triple-double of the season with 27 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists as the Nuggets blew past the New Orleans Pelicans 125-113.

Michael Porter Jr. was the offensive standout for Denver though with 36 points, including seven-of-12 from three-point range, while Jamal Murray contributed 20 points.

Denver improved to 31-19 and are nine games behind conference leaders Oklahoma City.

In San Francisco, the Golden State Warriors held off a furious late rally from the Orlando Magic to bag a 104-99 victory.

The Warriors opened up a 15-point lead to start the fourth quarter after outscoring Orlando 39-24 in the third, only for the Magic to hit back in the fourth to take a fleeting 92-90 lead with just over four minutes remaining.

But the Warriors dominated the final minutes to regain the lead and close out the win, Andrew Wiggins (25 points) and Stephen Curry (24) combining for 49 points.

In Portland, Devin Booker became the Phoenix Suns’ all-time leading points scorer, surpassing Walter Davis’s total of 15,666 points for the franchise.

However, Booker’s night finished on a downbeat note with a missed free throw at the end of overtime that would have tied the game, allowing the Trail Blazers to escape with a 121-119 victory.

Pakistan-born Usman Khawaja condemns Australian radio for dumping journalist over Gaza stance
  • Khawaja has condemned radio station’s decision to drop cricket journalist Peter Lalor from coverage of Sri Lanka test series
  • Lalor’s feed on X includes re-posts of news stories about Israeli attacks in Gaza and accusations of genocide

MELBOURNE: Australia batsman Usman Khawaja has condemned a radio station’s decision to drop cricket journalist Peter Lalor from its coverage of the Sri Lanka test series over social media posts related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Australian radio station SEN confirmed on Tuesday it had parted ways with Lalor, the former chief cricket writer of The Australian newspaper, after dialogue with him about some of the commentary on his social media.

Lalor’s feed on X includes re-posts of news stories about Israeli attacks in Gaza and accusations of genocide levelled at the Israeli government.

Pakistan-born Khawaja, who has been vocal in his support for Palestinians, wrote on Instagram that Lalor “deserved better.”

“Standing up for the people of Gaza is not antisemitic nor does it have anything to do with my Jewish brothers and sisters in Australia, but everything to do with the Israeli government and their deplorable actions,” Khawaja said.

“It has everything to do with justice and human rights. Unfortunately hatred toward the Jewish and Muslim community will always exist.”

Australia has been grappling with a series of antisemitic attacks on synagogues, buildings and cars since the beginning of the Israel-Gaza war in late-2023.

Lalor, who was working as a freelance commentator for SEN, said he was told by the station’s management that there were accusations he was antisemitic, which he objected to.

“I was told my retweeting was not balanced, and insensitive to one side and that many people had complained,” he said in a statement to subscribers on his Cricket et Al substack.

SEN station boss Craig Hutchison said he and Lalor had a different view of the impact of the commentary on his social media.

“We respect Pete as a journalist and long-time contributor to the game but also acknowledge the fear that many families in our community feel right now, and we also need to respect that,” Hutchison told the Sydney Morning Herald.

Australia lead the two-match test series 1-0 after beating Sri Lanka by an innings and 242 runs in the opener in Galle.

The second test starts in Galle on Thursday.

  • From Post Malone, Cardi B to Shaquille O’Neal, the city will be buzzing long before Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs attempt a monumental three-peat

LOS ANGELES: The Super Bowl isn’t just a game on Sunday. It’ll involve a nearly week-long spectacle taking over New Orleans with non-stop entertainment leading up to the big showdown between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles.

While the Chiefs and Eagles gear up for their championship rematch, the Big Easy will be the epicenter for star-studded concerts, exclusive parties, a comedy show and guest lists filled with A-listers.

From Post Malone, Cardi B to Shaquille O’Neal, the city will be buzzing long before Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs attempt a monumental three-peat.

“It’s going to be fun. It’s going to be different than other Super Bowls,” said Shaquille O’Neal, who will host his popular carnival-themed Shaq’s Fun House on Friday night.

It’s a hot ticket — starting at $199 — for the NBA legend’s over-the-top festival event featuring headline performances from Ludacris, John Summit and O’Neal under his stage name DJ Diesel.

O’Neal’s event will feature several attractions including a Ferris wheel, circus performers and premium bar. This will be somewhat of a homecoming week for O’Neal, who played college hoops at Louisiana State University and visits Louisiana about four times a year.

For Flavor Flav, he wants to help lift up morale in New Orleans following the aftermath of the terror attack that killed 14 people on New Year’s Day.

“This is going to be special. I’m here to uplift spirits,” said Flav, who will perform at Guy Fieri’s Flavortown Tailgate along with Diplo and Cowboy Mouth on Sunday afternoon. It’s free for general admission with paid upgraded experiences for $49.99 and $349 for a VIP ticket.

“I’m getting on the turntables to make people party and have a good time,” he said.

Along with those events, here’s a look at some of the invite-only and public events during a busy Super Bowl week:

Fanatics Party

Michael Rubin’s Fanatics Super Bowl party is impossible to get into without an invite. The star-studded affair on Saturday afternoon is strictly for the who’s who of sports and entertainment.

Rubin, the founder and CEO of Fanatics, will likely be front and center, taking in performances from Post Malone, Travis Scott, Don Tolliver and many more.

The expected attendees include big names such as Kim Kardashian, Justin Bieber, Lil Baby, Tiffany Haddish and Tom Brady.

Madden Bowl

Just like EA Sports’ iconic phrase, “It’s in the game,” Jelly Roll, Chris Stapleton and Shaboozey will literally be in the game at the Madden Bowl.

The trio is set to separately take the stage Friday night, bringing the hype before the competition kicks off.

“I can’t wait to keep this party going,” Shaboozey said.

Along with performances, the event will include the Madden NFL 25 Championship Series in front of a live audience — where two of the world’s best player will travel to New Orleans for their share of the $1 million prize pool.

Double up for some, Triple duties for Post Malone & Diplo

The Madden Bowl won’t be the only stage where Stapleton will showcase his powerhouse vocals. The country star is set to headline the SiriusXM and Pandora concert on Thursday night.

Stapleton’s performance will air on SiriusXM’s Chris Stapleton Radio, an exclusive channel curated and presented by him and his band. Pandora listeners can access the Chris Stapleton Radio station.

After Ludacris takes the stage at Shaq’s Fun House on Friday, the rapper will perform Sunday at On Location’s Super Bowl pre-game party. He’ll be joined by rock band The Revivalists at the Club 67 and Touchdown Club just outside the Caesars Superdome for One Location — a premium hospitality provider of the NFL.

Post Malone will be making moves too. He’s scheduled to perform at three different events. Along with Fanatics, the superstar artist will hit the stage at the Bud Light Backyard Tour on Friday, then he’s set to headline the YouTube Tailgate Concert on Sunday near the Superdome.

Diplo will perform at parties for Sports Illustrated and Maxim along with Guy Fieri’s tailgate event.

Gospel celebration

Bill Bellamy and Rocsi Diaz will bring some gospel flavor to the Big Easy.

The tandem will host the Super Bowl Soulful Celebration on Wednesday night. The lineup includes some of music’s best from The Isley Brothers, Muni Long, Yolanda Adams, Tori Kelly and Jonathan McReynolds.

Other performances include New Orleans natives Master P, Big Freedia, Lucky Daye and Trombone Shorty. The NFL Players Choir will also participate.

“Hosting the Super Bowl Soulful Celebration is like hitting the trifecta: music, faith, and football all in one show,” Bellamy said. “I’m excited to bring some laughs, some energy and to be part of this incredible night with an amazing lineup.”

Michael Strahan, an NFL Hall of Famer and “Good Morning America” co-anchor, will receive the Lifetime of Inspiration award. He called the honor “truly special.”

New Orleans Saints player Cameron Jordan will be given the community award while Los Angeles Rams star rookie Jared Verse will be honored with the rising star award.

Timbaland and Maxim

Super producer Timbaland will bring his massive hits into New Orleans with the help of Maxim.

Timbaland will perform at a special concert at the Maxim Saints & Sinners Big Game Party on Saturday. The show will include performances from DJ Loud Luxury, Plastik Funk, DJ unKommon and former NFL player Le’Veon Bell.

DJ unKommon and Diplo will be featured performers at a pregame party Friday.

Other concerts happening around the Super Bowl

Captain Morgan will transform Bourbon Street into Rum Street with the help of T-Pain, who will headline a concert on Saturday night.

On the same night, Cardi B is expected to perform at the “Cardi Gras.” 50 Cent will hold the Super Bold Comedy Block Party with standups from Bill Bellamy, Chico Bean and DC Young Fly.

Dom Dolla and Diplo will perform at the Sports Illustrated Party.

On Friday, Nelly and Chainsmokers is set to perform at h.wood Homecoming and Draft Kings event. Shannon Sharpe and Chad “Ochosinco” Johnson will do an in-person podcast called the Nightcap NSFW Tour.
